The 7 best places to play Catan online in 2026 (ranked)

From the official Catan Universe to scrappy free clones — here's where Catan actually lives on the web, and which one to pick for your group.

If you've Googled 'play Catan online' lately you've seen the same handful of sites jockeying for the top spot for the better part of a decade. Some of them have aged into polished products, some have quietly stagnated, and a couple of newcomers are finally chipping away at the leaders. Here's how the field actually shakes out in 2026.

We graded each site on four things real groups care about: how fast you can get into a game, whether your friends need an account, how faithful the rules are to the physical box, and price.

1. Catan Universe (catanuniverse.com)

The official offering from CATAN GmbH. It's the only place you can legally play the licensed expansions — Seafarers, Cities & Knights, Traders & Barbarians and the newer New Energies scenario — against other humans. Buy expansions à la carte or grab the all-inclusive subscription.

Downsides: the UI still feels like a 2017 Unity app, matchmaking can be slow off-peak, and you'll need an account for everyone at the table. Worth it if you want the real, licensed Cities & Knights experience.

2. Colonist.io

The most popular fan-made site by a wide margin. Slick web client, fast matchmaking, ELO ladder, tournaments, replays, and a generous free tier. Their Plus subscription ($7/mo) unlocks custom maps, cosmetics, and stats.

If you want to climb a ladder and play hundreds of ranked games, this is the obvious pick. Just know you're playing 'Settlers of Catan' with the serial numbers filed off — names of resources and pieces are tweaked for trademark reasons.

3. OreYouSerious (that’s us!)

OK, we promise we tried to be objective. OreYouSerious is the new kid: a free, no-signup, browser-based Catan clone built for the case where you want to play one game with friends in the next sixty seconds. No accounts, no ladder, no ads — type a name, share a link, roll dice.

Where we fall short: no licensed expansions (and we never will — those belong to CATAN GmbH), no ranked play, no replays yet. Where we win: zero friction. If half your group is on mobile and someone has never played online before, OreYouSerious is the path of least resistance.

  • Free forever, no ads
  • No account or download required
  • 3-4 and 5-6 player base game
  • Configurable turn timers
  • Share-a-link to invite friends

4. Board Game Arena

BGA doesn’t carry the Catan license, but their massive catalog and rock-solid asynchronous play model makes it a great home base if you want Catan-likes plus 400 other board games in the same account. Premium is cheap.

5. Tabletop Simulator (Catan workshop mods)

If you've already paid for TTS this is essentially free Catan — the workshop has faithful mods of every expansion. You'll need someone to host, everyone needs the $20 client, and there are zero rules enforcement. Best for groups that already use TTS for everything.

6. Catan: Console Edition (PS5 / Xbox / Switch)

Dovetail's console port has matured nicely since launch. Crossplay works, AI is solid, and the UI is purpose-built for a controller. It's a paid title (~$30) and the multiplayer community is smaller than the browser sites, but for couch play with a partner it’s lovely.

7. Catan Classic (mobile app)

The single-player mobile app from Asmodee Digital. Not really an "online" site — multiplayer was sunset years ago — but it’s where a lot of people still log their solo games against AI.

Which should you pick?

  • Want licensed Cities & Knights or New Energies: Catan Universe.
  • Want ranked, hundreds of games, deep stats: Colonist.io.
  • Want to play one game with friends right now, no signup: OreYouSerious.
  • Want Catan + everything else in one subscription: Board Game Arena.
  • You already own Tabletop Simulator: TTS Catan mods.

The good news: every option on this list is alive and well in 2026. Pick the one that matches the friction tolerance of the friends you're playing with, not the one with the most features.
