If you've Googled 'play Catan online' lately you've seen the same handful of sites jockeying for the top spot for the better part of a decade. The official offering from CATAN GmbH. It's the only place you can legally play the licensed expansions — Seafarers, Cities & Knights, Traders & Barbarians and the newer New Energies scenario — against other humans. Buy expansions à la carte or grab the all-inclusive subscription.

Downsides: the UI still feels like a 2017 Unity app, matchmaking can be slow off-peak, and you'll need an account for everyone at the table. Worth it if you want the real, licensed Cities & Knights experience.

2. Colonist.io

The most popular fan-made site by a wide margin. Slick web client, fast matchmaking, ELO ladder, tournaments, replays, and a generous free tier. Their Plus subscription ($7/mo) unlocks custom maps, cosmetics, and stats.

If you want to climb a ladder and play hundreds of ranked games, this is the obvious pick. Just know you're playing 'Settlers of Catan' with the serial numbers filed off — names of resources and pieces are tweaked for trademark reasons.
